Verse Meaning

According to the classical exegete Al-Tabari, Quran 12:61 captures the solemn and determined promise made by Joseph's brothers. In response to Yusuf's demand that they bring their youngest brother (Benjamin), they replied, 'We will persuade his father concerning him, and indeed, we will do it.' The term used, 'sanurāwid,' implies a gentle yet persistent effort, acknowledging the difficulty of the task. As Imam Al-Sa'di notes, their need to persuade highlights Prophet Jacob's intense attachment to Benjamin, his only remaining comfort after the loss of Yusuf. The brothers' emphatic confirmation, 'wa innā lafā'ilūn' ('and indeed, we will do it'), is a heavily stressed phrase in Arabic, signaling their full commitment to fulfilling this condition, setting the stage for a poignant confrontation with their father.
