Verse Meaning

According to classical exegetes like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, Quran 10:43 addresses the profound reality of spiritual blindness. It describes a group of people who physically look at the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), observing his noble character and the clear signs of his prophethood, yet fail to gain any guidance. Al-Tabari explains that Allah has 'removed from them the success of being guided' (salaba al-tawfiq), making their physical sight useless for perceiving the truth. The verse makes a powerful distinction between the physical act of looking (`yanẓur`) and the inner, perceptive insight (`yubṣirūn`). It highlights that even the Prophet cannot bestow this inner sight. This core message, as Al-Qurtubi notes, serves as a refutation against ideologies that deny divine will in guidance. The verse is ultimately a divine consolation (tasliyah) for the Prophet, affirming that his mission is to convey the message, while the ability to truly 'see' and accept it is a gift granted by Allah alone.
