Verse Meaning

According to the classical exegete Ibn Kathir, Quran 11:19 provides a definitive profile of the accursed unjust, identifying them through three core actions: they actively prevent people from following the truth, they desire to distort this truth to make it seem crooked, and they fundamentally disbelieve in the Hereafter. Al-Tabari adds a historical dimension, noting this was the practice of the Quraysh who persecuted early Muslims. The synthesis of scholarly views reveals a methodology of misguidance; it is not passive disbelief but an active campaign of obstruction and distortion. As Imam al-Waseet explains, they seek 'iwaj'—a crookedness in abstract matters like faith and principles. This malicious effort is rooted in their denial of ultimate accountability, a point emphasized by the repeated pronoun 'hum' ('they') to signify their profound and complete state of disbelief in the life to come.
