Verse Meaning

According to Tafsir As-Sa'di, Quran 12:71 masterfully captures the reaction of the innocent to a false accusation. When the herald declared them thieves, the brothers of Yusuf (as) did not flee; instead, they turned and directly faced their accusers ('wa aqbalū 'alayhim'). This act, as As-Sa'di highlights, is a powerful non-verbal declaration of innocence, for a guilty person's first instinct is to create distance. Furthermore, their question, 'What have you lost?' ('mādhā tafqidūn'), rather than a defensive 'What did we steal?', shows their absolute certainty that they were blameless. Al-Wasit notes that the word 'tafqidūn' conveys a sense of genuine inquiry about a missing item, devoid of any admission of guilt. Thus, this brief verse, through both action and dialogue, provides a profound psychological insight into the composure and confidence that stems from truthfulness.
