Verse Meaning

According to Imam al-Tabari, Quran 12:60 delivers a firm and strategic ultimatum from Prophet Yusuf (AS) to his brothers. After enticing them with generous provisions and hospitality, he introduces a non-negotiable condition for any future dealings. This verse synthesizes a threat with a clear boundary; as Ibn Kathir explains, it means, 'If you do not bring him with you next time, you will receive no more provisions from me, and you are not to even approach me.' This command was not merely a display of power but a calculated move, as Imam al-Saddi notes, Yusuf knew their desperate need for grain would compel them to comply. The ultimatum has two parts: the denial of goods ('fala kayla lakum indi' - no measure for you from me) and the severing of relations ('wa la taqrabun' - and do not come near me), making the stakes exceptionally high and setting the stage for the next phase of his divine plan to reunite his family.
