This concept delineates two fundamental categories of responsibilities: those owed directly to God, such as worship and repentance (Huquq Allah), and those owed to fellow human beings and all of creation, such as charity, justice, and compassion (Huquq al-Ibad). The Quranic passage in Surah Al-Imran, verses 3:133-136, provides a masterful synthesis of this principle. Classical commentators like Ibn Kathir explain that these verses describe the 'Muttaqin' (the pious), for whom Paradise is prepared, as those who perfectly harmonize these duties. They fulfill the rights of creation by spending in charity, restraining anger, and pardoning others (3:134), and they fulfill the rights of the Creator by immediately remembering Him and seeking forgiveness after transgressing (3:135). This integration demonstrates that in Islam, spiritual uprightness is inseparable from social excellence, and attaining divine forgiveness is contingent upon upholding one's obligations to both God and His creation.
