Verse Meaning

According to the classical commentators, Quran 11:122, 'And wait, indeed, we are waiting,' is a profound and decisive statement of threat and certainty directed at those who oppose the divine message. Ibn Kathir explains this as a declaration that the final outcome will reveal the truth, emphasizing that 'the wrongdoers will not succeed.' This verse starkly contrasts two forms of waiting: the defiant expectation of the disbelievers for the failure of the believers, and the patient, confident waiting of the believers for Allah's promised victory and justice. Al-Baghawi clarifies this dichotomy, stating the disbelievers should wait for the consequence of their actions, while the believers wait for Allah's mercy and triumph. The active participle 'muntazirun' (waiters) signifies not a passive idleness, but an active, expectant state of being, rooted in unwavering faith in the ultimate fulfillment of God's promise.
