Verse Meaning
According to the classical exegete Ibn Kathir, the final verse of Surah Al-Qari'ah, 'Narun Hamiyah,' provides a terrifying and definitive answer to the question posed in the previous verse: it is 'a scorching Fire.' This is not merely a fire, but one of extreme and overwhelming heat. The term 'Hamiyah' signifies a fire that has been intensely heated and has reached its peak temperature. As-Sa'di elaborates that its heat is so severe that it has surpassed the intensity of the fire known in this world by seventy times. This interpretation is not metaphorical but is grounded in authentic prophetic traditions. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) explained that the fire we use is just one of seventy parts of the Hellfire. When his companions expressed that worldly fire would be sufficient for punishment, he clarified that the fire of Hell is 69 times more intense. This verse, therefore, serves as the ultimate warning for those whose scales of good deeds are found to be light on the Day of Judgment, portraying their final abode not just as a pit, but as an abyss of fiercely blazing fire.
