Verse Meaning

According to the classical scholar Al-Tabari, Quran 12:6 serves as Prophet Yaqub's inspired interpretation of Yusuf's dream, functioning as a divine blueprint for his future. This verse reveals a multi-faceted prophecy: Yusuf's divine selection ('yajtabika'), the gift of profound insight ('ta'wil al-ahadith'), and the culmination of God's favor upon the entire prophetic lineage. Ibn Kathir's tafsir emphasizes that this selection is for prophethood, while Al-Qurtubi links the 'completion of favor' to both spiritual honor and worldly authority. The synthesis of these scholarly views shows that the verse is not merely about dream interpretation but about receiving a divine framework to understand and navigate a life mission foreordained by God. It connects Yusuf's destiny to the legacy of his forefathers, Ibrahim and Ishaq, framing his story as a continuation of a covenant of divine grace. The concluding statement, 'Indeed, your Lord is All-Knowing, All-Wise,' underscores that this selection and the trials to come are rooted in perfect divine knowledge and wisdom.

Questions for Reflection

Personal Purpose & Divine Selection

Al-Tabari clarifies that 'yajtabika' means your Lord 'chooses and selects you.' Reflect on the unique blessings, talents, and even trials in your life. How might these be signs of a specific purpose Allah has chosen for you, distinct from anyone else?

Wisdom in Hardship

Ibn Kathir links Yusuf's future to the legacy of Ibrahim and Ishaq, who faced immense trials. Contemplate a current or past difficulty. How does viewing it as part of a legacy of faith, similar to the prophets, change your understanding of its purpose in your life?

The Gift of Insight

Al-Qurtubi and other scholars explain 'ta'wil al-ahadith' as the ability to understand the true meaning of events. In what areas of your life do you need this divine insight right now? How can you position yourself to receive this gift from the All-Knowing (Al-'Alim), the All-Wise (Al-Hakim)?

Practical Applications

Cultivate spiritual insight to see the deeper meaning in life's events, understanding them as 'hadith' (narratives) from Allah.

Apply this when facing career setbacks, relationship challenges, or unexpected changes, asking 'What is Allah teaching me through this event?' instead of 'Why is this happening to me?'

In moments of hardship, recall the legacy of divine favor on past prophets to strengthen your trust in its eventual completion for you.

During prolonged illness, financial difficulty, or family strife, reflect on how Allah aided the prophets to reinforce faith that your story, too, will conclude with His favor.

Hidden Gem

The synthesis of scholarly thought reveals that the favor of Allah is 'completed' ('yutimmu ni'matahu') not by avoiding trials, but by successfully navigating them through the divinely-gifted wisdom mentioned in the same verse. The choice, the knowledge, and the completion of favor are an interconnected spiritual process, not separate rewards.
