Verse Meaning
According to the comprehensive analysis of classical scholars like Imam Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir, the phrase 'Fa ummuhu hawiyah' (His mother is Hawiyah) carries a profound dual meaning. The primary interpretation, as Ibn Jarir explains, is that his ultimate abode and only refuge—the place that embraces him as a mother embraces a child—will be 'Hawiyah,' a name for the Hellfire derived from the word for falling into a deep abyss. [12, 5] This powerful metaphor signifies an inescapable and all-encompassing destination. A second, equally vivid interpretation offered by scholars including Qatada and Abu Salih, and cited by Ibn Kathir, focuses on the literal meaning of 'umm' as 'head' or 'brain'. [7, 13] In this view, the verse means he will be thrown headfirst, tumbling into the Fire on his 'umm ra'sih' (the mother of his head). [7] This synthesis of scholarly views presents a terrifying image: Hell is not just a destination but an entity that becomes the sinner's only 'mother' or refuge, and the entry into it is a violent, headlong plunge into its depths.
