Verse Meaning

According to the classical exegete Imam Al-Tabari, the command in Quran 10:105, 'And [I was commanded], 'Direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth,'' signifies a complete and sincere dedication of one's entire self to Islam. Ibn Kathir elaborates on this, explaining it as a call for pure and sincere worship (Ikhlas), turning away completely from polytheism (Shirk). This is reinforced by As-Sa'di, who notes it means purifying both outward and inward actions for Allah alone. The term 'Hanif,' as Al-Qurtubi clarifies, means to be upright and to lean away from all false paths, focusing exclusively on the one true faith. This concept points to the natural, pure monotheism that is the innate disposition of humanity, famously exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim. Thus, the verse is not merely a statement but a divine instruction for a holistic spiritual orientation: to align one's entire being with pure monotheism, establishing a firm, unwavering commitment to Allah and actively dissociating from any form of polytheism.
