Verse Meaning

According to the classical scholar Ibn Kathir, Quran verse 10:18 is a decisive refutation of the core justification for idolatry held by the polytheists. [2] The verse exposes the foolishness of worshipping created things that possess no power to either harm or benefit, and then compounds this error by inventing a false theology where these powerless idols act as intermediaries or 'intercessors' with Allah. Al-Tabari emphasizes the powerful rhetorical question, 'Do you inform Allah of what He does not know in the heavens or on the earth?', highlighting the absurdity of their claim. [13] It implies they are trying to tell the All-Knowing God about supposed partners whose existence is a fabrication, unknown to Him because they are non-existent. The synthesis of these scholarly views reveals a two-fold error: a practical error in worshipping the powerless and a theological error in inventing a system of intercession that violates the principle of Tawheed (Divine Unity). Al-Qurtubi notes the profound ignorance in expecting future intercession from that which provides no present benefit or harm. [15] This verse is a foundational text in Islamic theology (Aqidah), decisively cutting off the justification for shirk (polytheism) by dismantling the argument of intercession and affirming Allah's absolute knowledge and transcendence over any partners.

Questions for Reflection

Textual & Theological Contemplation

Al-Tabari interprets the phrase 'Do you inform Allah of what He does not know?' as a profound negation of the intercessors' very existence. Contemplate the weight of this statement. If these intercessors truly existed and had station with Allah, the All-Knowing would know of them. How does this single question dismantle the entire logical foundation of shirk?

Personal & Internal Contemplation

The verse states they worship what 'neither harms them nor benefits them.' Reflect on the subtle dependencies in your own life. Do you attribute the power to grant ultimate benefit (like happiness or success) or inflict ultimate harm (like failure or misery) to anything other than Allah—be it a job, a person, or your own ego? Where have you placed your hope and fear?

Relational & Social Contemplation

The polytheists said, 'These are our intercessors,' seeking a shortcut or a 'connection' to God through others. In what ways does modern society encourage us to seek validation, approval, or 'intercession' from other people (e.g., influencers, authority figures, social groups) instead of seeking it directly from Allah? How does this verse call us to a radical state of spiritual independence and direct relationship with our Creator?

Practical Applications

Conduct a 'Dependency Audit': Identify any person, object, or status you rely on for benefit or fear for harm, and consciously redirect that ultimate reliance back to Allah alone.

Applicable to over-reliance on one's career for security, social media for validation, or specific people for happiness, reminding us the ultimate source is Allah.

Elevate Your Du'a (Supplication): Make it a principle to speak directly to Allah in your supplications, abandoning any internal feeling that you need an intermediary to make your case for you.

Counteracts the cultural or superstitious belief in needing 'saints' or 'pious figures' to carry prayers to God, purifying the act of worship.

Hidden Gem

The synthesis of the tafsirs reveals a profound spiritual truth: the act of inventing intercessors is not just a theological mistake, but an attempt to make God conform to human social structures (kings, courts, and middlemen). Contemplating this verse helps one appreciate the liberating nature of Tawheed, which frees humanity from all forms of spiritual hierarchy and grants every individual a direct, unmediated line to the Lord of the worlds.
