Verse Meaning

According to the classical exegete Imam Al-Tabari, Quran 10:39 diagnoses a primary cause of disbelief: the hasty rejection of truth before one's knowledge can fully encompass it. The verse states that the disbelievers deny the Quran not based on evidence, but on ignorance, having failed to grasp its meanings and not yet witnessing the fulfillment of its warnings. Ibn Kathir adds that this denial stems from 'ignorance and foolishness.' This pattern is not new; as the verse points out, 'Thus did those before them deny.' Al-Qurtubi memorably connects this verse to the wisdom that 'one is hostile to what one is ignorant of,' highlighting that their rejection is a reaction of arrogant incomprehension. The verse concludes with a stern warning to the Prophet and the reader: 'Then see what was the consequence for the wrongdoers!' This serves as a powerful call for intellectual humility and patient investigation, contrasting the disbelievers' rash denial with the believer's pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
