Verse Meaning

According to the classical exegete Ibn Kathir, verse 11:104 explains that the Day of Judgment is not delayed arbitrarily but is postponed only for a predetermined and counted term (`ajalin ma'dud`). This concept is reinforced by other major commentators like Al-Tabari and Al-Qurtubi, who clarify that this 'counted term' refers to a specific duration foreknown and fixed by Allah. Imam As-Sa'di adds a profound layer, explaining that this delay allows for the completion of creation as divinely willed; once the appointed number of souls from the progeny of Adam has come into existence, the Final Hour will be established without any further delay. The term `ma'dud` (counted/reckoned) emphasizes precision and certainty. It signifies that the appointed time is not vague but is meticulously calculated in the divine knowledge of Allah, ensuring it neither comes a moment early nor a moment late. Therefore, the verse serves as both a reassurance and a warning: the delay is part of a divine plan and wisdom, but its end is definite and unalterable.
