According to classical scholars like Al-Tabari, Quran 2:77 serves as a powerful divine rebuke, questioning the logic of those who believe their secret disbelief and hidden agendas are concealed from Allah. This verse directly addresses a faction of the Jews in Madinah who, as Ibn Kathir and Qatadah clarify, would publicly profess faith to the Muslims but privately conceal their disbelief and knowledge from their own scriptures that affirmed the prophethood of Muhammad (ﷺ).
