Verse Meaning

According to the classical commentary of Al-Tabari, Quran 2:202, 'Those will have a share of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning,' refers to the believers who, after performing their Hajj rituals, pray for the good of this world and the hereafter. This verse confirms that their efforts and supplications are not in vain; they will receive a just portion of reward for their deeds. The phrase 'mā kasabū' (what they have earned) emphasizes that the reward is a consequence of their own actions and intentions. The verse concludes with a powerful attribute of Allah: 'saree'ul hisāb' (swift in reckoning). This signifies Allah's perfect knowledge and ability to account for the deeds of all creation without any delay or effort. As Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib is reported to have said, Allah can account for all of creation in a day just as He provides for them all in a day. This serves as both a comfort to the believers, assuring them that their rewards are secured, and a warning that accountability is certain and imminent.

Questions for Reflection

Personal

Reflect on a recent effort you made. Did you consciously connect that effort with a prayer for a 'share' of good from Allah in this life and the next? How can you make this a more consistent practice?

Cosmic

Contemplate the meaning of 'Allah is swift in reckoning'. How does this attribute challenge the human perception of time and consequence? How does it affect your understanding of divine justice?

Practical Applications

After completing a significant task or project, make a conscious dua to Allah, asking for the good of it in this life and the next.

Applicable after completing a degree, a major work project, or even a personal goal.

Cultivate a mindset of accountability by reminding yourself that 'Allah is swift in reckoning' throughout your day.

Useful in moments of temptation or when faced with ethical dilemmas in personal or professional life.

Hidden Gem

The verse doesn't say 'they will get everything they earned', but rather 'a share of what they earned'. This implies that Allah's reward may be different from what we expect, and it is portioned out with divine wisdom. It's an invitation to trust in Allah's judgment of what is truly best for us as a reward for our efforts.
